Contractor Furloughs Leave Navy Student Pilots Grounded

CORPUS CHRISTI - Student pilots at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and Naval Air Station Kingsville are staying on the ground today.

As a result of the ongoing government shutdown, the two major contractors who service and refuel the planes are on furlough.

L-3 Vertex stopped working as of Friday evening and BAE plans to stop as of 11 p-m tonight, according to Navy officials.

This impacts students who were scheduled to fly with an instructor, but officials tell us that active duty pilots are still flying.

Meanwhile, about 100 civilian employees will return to work at both bases today.
