Conserving H2O While Planting a Lavish Lawn

CORPUS CHRISTI - April is water month but conserving water is a year-round priority in the coastal bend. The city of Corpus Christi has partnered with Braselton Homes to promote xeriscaping, a word you're going to be hearing more about.

Xeriscaping is simply landscaping that requires minimal water and eliminates the need for irrigation. Things like
fluorescent flowers, plush plants and green grass are becoming more common in South Texas yards.

"In some of our local nurseries we have water-wise labels, they're purple labels that are on the plants, that are from our xeriscape list and those are specifically suited for this region," Brent Clayton said.

Clayton is the Corpus Christi Water Resource Project Manager. He got together with Braselton Homes to help push water conservation beyond times of drought.

"When we were in stage two last year, we actually achieved about a 16 percent reduction in residential consumption due to our once a week watering," Clayton said.

He says now that the city is back in stage one, following conservation measures is not currently mandatory, but simply the right thing to do.

"We know it's effective so we're asking people to do it voluntarily so we can preserve our supply in our reservoirs." he added.

Plus, Clayton says the price for water efficient plants compared to others isn't much different. Drought resistant grasses can cost a little more, but Clayton says it's worth it.

"The difference in price for sodding a yard might be a couple hundred dollars but you're definitely going to see a return on that in the amount of water savings you'll have over the years," he said.

Clayton says that up to 50 percent of water use comes from outdoor irrigation. So, landscaping more effectively will continue conservation efforts in the coastal bend, and still give residents a lavish lawn.
