College Student Eats Pot Cookie Then Jumps To Death

COLORADO - An international college student is dead after he ate a marijuana infused cookie then jumped from the balcony of a Denver hotel.

While "marijuana intoxication" is listed as a condition contributing to his death, many call this case most unusual.

What happened here on the fourth floor of the Denver hotel, now three weeks ago, still has both investigators and medical experts asking questions.

Nineteen year old Levi Pongi, an international student from the Republic of Congo, was on spring break with three friends from school in Wyoming. According to an autopsy report the group decided to try marijuana cookies.

That report says Pongi ate some and started acting angry.

It says he even began pulling things off the wall.

His friends reportedly tried to calm him down but Pongi jumped out of bed, ran to the balcony and jumped over the railing.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dr. Scott Bentz, Presbyterian St. Luke's Med Center, said, "it's not a typical toxidrome or a typical behavior related to ingesting marijuana or eating marijuana."

Doctor Scott Bentz works in the ER at Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center.

He's seen a few patients with odd reactions to pot but he says Pongi behavior doesn't fit.

Dr. Scott Bentz said, "marijuana in its inhaled or ingested forms don't typical cause a loss of impulse control or erratic behavior."

The autopsy report lists Pongi's death as an accident but it also names marijuana intoxication as a significant factor to that accident.

The medical examiner did find the active ingredient in marijuana in Pongi's blood, but then says if he had a negative reaction his behavior should have been different.

Dr. Scott Bentz said 'with editable marijuana we are seeing a total different toxidrome where people are coming in very very sedated or they are not breathing as well."
