Code Enforcement Takes on a Different Approach to Assessing Neighborhoods

CORPUS CHRISTI - The city of Corpus Christi continued its effort Thursday to clean up our town, one area at a time. It's all part of the city's Operation Proud Partner program, Code Enforcement took to the street assessing properties in the Flour Bluff areas for a second time.
"We are looking at the good the bad and the ugly," says Tracey Cantu Code Enforcement Supervisor.
Cantu says she was pleasantly surprised to see homes well kept and up to code in many Flour Bluff neighborhoods.
"They are doing fairly well, we are really seeing minimal violations in this area," says Cantu.
Thursday's inspection process was a little bit different than in the past. Instead of only visiting homes with violations, five teams from Code Enforcement combed through neighborhoods documenting all properties. The teams used iPhones to take pictures of each property, then rated each on a scale from zero to three. Zero being the best with no violations and three having the most violations. Most of Thursday's the properties received zeros and ones. With the use of their cell phone pictures Code Enforcement is able to provide a more accurate portrayal of neighborhoods across Corpus Christi rather than just presenting violations to the city. Information the teams collect from flour bluff's assessment will be complied into to a color coded map designating problems areas.
"What we are hoping to do with that is address the violations and we'll come back say a year from now and repeat this process and that will gauge the success of our code enforcement program," says Cantu.
Which gives the department a report card on their work.
