CORPUS CHRISTI - In January, the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) will ask lawmakers to approve a five percent rate increase. Today local residents and officials held a rally at City Hall to voice opposition to the increase. Todd Hunter with the Coastal Windstorm Task Force said at the rally, "Every time somebody files one of these bills to raise our rates... it stops growth."
Stopping growth; that is the main concern South Texas residents have when TWIA asks for an insurance rate hike in January. James Skrobarczyk is a real estate broker and home builder. He attended the rally at City Hall, today, and says higher windstorm insurance rates have hurt his business in the past. Skrobarczky says he fears another rate hike could be detrimental, not only to his business, but to the growth of Nueces County.
"Throughout my life in the building business and the real estate business," he said, "many, many times people will come here, review the area, want to move here and not come here because of the insurance."
That's why the group called Coastal Windstorm Task Force has paired up with the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce; to spread awareness. Todd Hunter who heads up the task force said, "Why shouldn't the rate payers have a say-so? Why shouldn't the rate payers be involved more? You talk about rates? Have the homeowners involved in this bill."
By having input from the homeowners, it's the task force's hope that they can convince lawmakers to lower the price of insurance, spread the cost of it statewide and reform the TWIA.
Members of the windstorm association will be meet here in Corpus Christi tomorrow at the Omni Bayfront Hotel. The meeting starts at 8 a.m. Members of the Coastal Windstorm Task Force say anyone who's concerned about the rate hike should attend the meeting.
