CORPUS CHRISTI - Our drought conditions are still getting worse. Our combined lake levels have fallen to 37 percent. Now local restaurants have begun taking measures to try and help conserve water.

Normally when you go to a restaurant you see a glass of ice cold water waiting for you. Well that won't be happening any more. The Coastal Bend Restaurant Association has stepped in asking restaurants to not give out water unless a customer asks for it.

"We understand that one glass of water inside a restaurant is not going to make or break. But our goal is to drive awareness and get everybody to think about their water consumption while one at the restaurant and two at home," said Coastal Bend Restaurant Association President and Texas Roadhouse Managing Partner Mike Schmidt.

People eating out today all thought it was a great idea.

"Not placing water at the table and actually requesting, or taking requests, from customers it's a very positive thing," said customer Colette Rye.

Many other customers we spoke to agreed this was a good idea and that this is a measure that should have been taken a long time ago.

"Overall if you request it, you know it's something you want. But if it's just automatically there half of the time it's just wasted. It's wasted water," said customer Domingo Rodriguez.

With this new change customers hope they don't have to see this all to familiar scene ever, described by Rodriguez, again.

"I've seen it happen many times where you see the glasses, they're full of water and nobody ever messes with them or touches them by no means," said Rodriguez.

Hundreds of restaurants in the Coastal Bend are participating in this new initiative to help try and conserve water.
