Coast Guard Saves Eight from Burning Fishing Boat

NEAR FREEPORT, TX - The U.S. Coast Guard rescued eight people from a burning fishing vessel Saturday night in the Gulf of Mexico.

They were notified by a crewmember over the radio that their boat was on fire and they were preparing to abandon their 48-foot ship.

A helicopter and rescue ship was dispatched and reached the boat within an hour. They were able to contain the fire and bring the eight crewmembers onto the rescue boat.

Guard officials give credit to the crew of the vessel for being prepared and having an emergency plan, including carrying life jackets, which saved them critical minutes and made their rescue easier.
