GALVESTON - A dramatic rescue of a 12-year-old boy off Crystal Beach.
The Coast Guard says the boy "drifted out" on an inner tube, hundreds of yards from shore!
An innocent afternoon swim with family quickly turned terrifying when the 12-year old got swept out in a current and wound up nearly 400 yards off shore.
He was hanging on an inner tube -- which is what may have saved him.
Rodney Rios and the three other coast guard crew members from Ellington Field were out doing a routine shore patrol when they got the call.
They found the 12-year old floating about nine minutes later. A rescue swimmer went into the water and saved him.
A scary story that has a happy ending for this boy who is on vacation with his family from North Texas.
A Coast Guard boat crew arrived later and was able to recover the boy's inner tube.
