Co-Workers Raising Money for Badly Injured Cab Driver

CORPUS CHRISTI -- A man hit by a suspected drunk driver is struggling to recover almost a week after the devastating crash.

Tonight, his co-workers are raising money so that he doesn't have to do it alone.

"Tom's the type that everybody loves," said Julie Tandy with Green-N-Go Cabs, "he's always in a good mood, he comes to work in a good mood, he's just always happy."

Tandy hired Tom Nelson not once, but twice, the second time just a few months ago, as he worked to try and bring his family back to the Coastal Bend.

"Tom has a wife and two kids that are in Pennsylvania trying to get down here," Tandy explained.

He was working early Thursday morning, raising money to do just that when a suspected drunk driver hit him.

"Right now, Tom has almost every bone on the right side of his body broke," she described, "his right pelvis, right leg, right shoulder, right arm, basically about everything on his right side."

He's been through one surgery and will likely need more. Right now he's in the intensive care unit, alone.

"I think it'd do Tom a world of good to be able to see his wife and kids they've only been able to talk for about 2 minutes since all of this happened," Tandy said.

Green-N-Go is hoping to reunite the family for the holidays, but without his cab driving commission, it's simply not possible without help.

"The only income these guys have is when they're actually driving, they're contract drivers, so they don't get a paycheck they get a commission," said Tandy.

She's hoping the community will come together to help a man who's spent many nights getting people in the Coastal Bend home safely.

"Tom was out doing the responsible thing and getting people home that should have been calling a cab, he was taking people home safely and this happened," Tandy said.

Tom's wife is pregnant with the couple's 3rd child. Their other two children have autism, so, this family has been through a struggle.

If you'd like to help, you can donate at any Kleberg Bank, just ask to donate to the benefit for Tom Nelson account.

You can also bring donations into Green-N-Go cabs at 4905 Neptune.
