CORPUS CHRISTI - Local singer Clarissa Serna has recently become a TV sensation following her awesome performance during blind auditions on NBC's "The Voice". Today Serna was honored by the Kiwanis Club for her work with Chicas Rock, a local girls outreach program.
After that we were able to sit down and talk about her experience so far on NBC's The Voice. Because of the contest's rules, we could only talk about what has aired. So no dirt on who's been eliminated, sorry folks. But she does say so far, she can't complain.
"The experience was like a dream. Just completely surreal. I know I said it like 50 times after my audition, but couldn't believe that it actually happened," said Serna about the blind auditions.
This was actually the second time she auditioned for the show. Now that she has made it, she hopes to make it all the way with a little help from her new coach, Shakira.
She told me her new coach is incredibly gorgeous in person. "But not just that her personality is incredible. You know, um, she's a lot more ... Like mellow than I expected her to be. Cus you know Latinas can be all like really out there and outspoken and stuff. She was very calm had really really great advice to give me," said Serna.
She kept quiet on how far she has made it on The Voice and about when she has to head back to LA. But she did say when her experience on the show is over, she plans to hit the ground running with her band, The Clarissa Serna Band.
She said her and her band members have been, "working on new material. Going over some old originals and stuff that we needed to work out. Basically preparing for a tour."
Clarissa has come a long way. She's no longer that 7 year old girl signing along with a karaoke set. Now, she's singing on a national platform. She says if there is one thing she's taken away from this experience so far, it's that "it's important to take chances and if you're comfortable, you need to get out of that comfort zone."
Clarissa won't be the only person from Corpus Christi to appear on "The Voice" this season. Local singer, Paula DeAnda also took part in a blind audition that's expected to air next week.
You can catch NBC's "The Voice" on KRIS 6 Mondays and Tuesdays at 7.
