ALICE - Over the last few months, Alice has dealt with an increase in gang violence. Today the mayor announced the city is working on a project called, "growing Great Neighborhoods."
They hope this project will clean up the city, and it's reputation.
Today we tagged along with code enforcement officer Jennifer Ruiz to take a look at some of the problems the city plans to target.
Ruiz took us down a road with some abandoned homes, that she believes provides a hiding spot for criminal activity, and says, "If we can board them up and run these gang members out, where will they be left to go?"
Boarding up abandoned homes is just one of the ideas the city has to bring down crime rates in Alice.
Code enforcement officers will begin working on the neighborhoods between Monterrey Street and Gloria Street. That area includes Escobar Street, which was the scene of a drive by shooting back in late July. That set off several gang related crimes.
Some problems the city plans to tackle include junk cars, tall grass, and areas where criminals can hide.
Ruiz drove us down an alleyway and says, "We have several overgrown weeds in our alleyways. They can hide. They can run. They can squat down. They can pick up debris that's back here and use it as a weapon."
Code enforcement has already sent out notices to residents letting them know about the violations on their property.
They are hoping this new project will help make great neighborhoods in Alice.
