CORPUS CHRISTI -- Former city manager Angel Escobar passed Tuesday morning almost a week after suffering a heart attack. City of Corpus Christi employees say his passing is a devastating blow to the whole community. Mayor Nelda Martinez said, "It's a sad day in Corpus Christi, this was a man who truly had a public servants heart."

City Secretary Armando Chapa raved about Escobar's work ethic and interest in the heart of this city's progress, "he was a hard working, committed public servant."

Herb Canales, another friend and co-worker said, "Escobar was always very detailed, very thorough, very complete in the work that he did, you know we miss him."

City employees shared their fondest thoughts of their dear friend and colleague who passed away at the age of 66.

"It's a shock for all of us who knew Angel for many years and worked closely with him," Canales said.

Canales says Escobar will be remembered for his 22 years of dedication to the people of Corpus Christi and the many projects that were completed under his watch. He started out working in the city's engineering department.

"There's so many to list the American Bank Center was a big project of his, the seawall renovation project, just a bunch of road projects of the city," Canales added.

Mayor Martinez remembers fondly Escobars career and the love he had for his whole family. "You would always see his face light up when he would talk about his kids and especially the stories about his grandchildren."

Armando Chapa, the city secretary and friend of Escobar said he saw him just days before his death and said he seemed to be in good health, only dealing with a cold. "He was battling the flu at the time but he was doing well."

"It's sad you know that he was retired about a year and half and didn't get to spend more time with his family," Canales said.

"He will be missed," Chapa added.

As of now the city will do what they can to support Escobar's family in their time of mourning and will miss Escobar dearly.
