CORPUS CHRISTI - If you've been to North Beach lately, you've seen it; signs of beach erosion are everywhere. A woman who lives there wants city leaders to come up with a long-term solution instead of a temporary band-aid.
"The problem here is that our shoreline or beach is eroding. It happens every 10 or 15 years," said Carrie Robertson.
Robertson was referring to coastal erosion. It happens wherever you have water and waves. In North Beach, the erosion has eaten away at the beachwalk.
The erosion at that beach is a personal issue for Robertson. She's not only running for city council, but also lives along the beach.
"Let's think outside the box," said Robertson.
For years, Corpus Christi has worked with the state on beach nourishment-- bringing sand from other places and adding it to the beach to protect the shoreline. Many coastal communities around the country do it; the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Dept. wants to do it again. However, Robertson said it doesn't fix the problem.
"I would like the city to....find...a long-term solution."
"[Something] like...building breakwaters and permanent hard structures in the water that help prevent that erosion...it's a larger investment...but...it can pay off," explained Robertson.
City leaders agreed with Robertson's point. However, they also say beach nourishment is a tried and true solution. Right now, the city's parks and recreation dept. is trying to get the funding for beach nourishment at North Beach. It's unclear when that project would begin.
