CORPUS CHRISTI - A lot of folks don't seem to be pleased Citgo placed the American, Texas and Citgo flags all at half-staff outside the refinery on Nueces Bay Boulevard this morning.
The company is a subsidiary of the Venezuelan national oil company. In case you weren't aware, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died yesterday following a lengthly battle with cancer.
Citgo released the following statement on death of Chavez on Tuesday:
"President Hugo Chávez of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela leaves behind a legacy of support for the underprivileged and promotion of social justice that transcends geographical boundaries. We at Citgo Petroleum Corporation are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the people of Venezuela in this time of grief."
Chavez was well known for his hostilities towards U.S. foreign policy, specifically towards former President and Texas Governor George W. Bush.
People who commented on our Facebook pages were appalled or curious of the legalities of lowering the American and Texas flags. According to the U.S. code title 4, in the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half staff according to presidential instructions or orders.
There were even some comments about the logic of lowering the flag for a non-Texan today considering this is the anniversary of the day the Alamo fell in 1836.
People in Lake Charles, Louisiana have also expressed their distaste for Citgo's lowering of only the American flag outside a facility there.
