Chemical Plant Fire Near Lake Charles

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana - A large fire at a chemical plant in Westlake, Lousiana forced a shelter in place order as a large plume of smoke moved across the surrounding area.

A KRIS viewer in the area for work sent in photos of the fire.

According to NBC affiliate KPLC, the Axiall Corporation reported a fire started around 1:40 in the vinyl chloride manufacturing area of the plant. The fire was out within an hour.

None of the employees or first responders were injured in the fire.

Multiple schools downwind from the plant were placed on lockdown during the fire. Students were released about an hour later than normal.
