CORPUS CHRISTI - The Chamber of Commerce has announced their thoughts on the street maintenance fee.
The Chamber is in favor of a $7/month fee for residents. That fee would be used to help cover the $15 million a year for streets maintenance.
The Chamber says they have concerns about the formula that is being used to determine how much businesses would pay. One issue they have is limiting the street fee based on square footage.
"Most of the council has already at least nodded with their heads that they'll accept no caps on square footage," said Council Member Rudy Garza in agreement with the Chamber.
The other issue is basing the fee on the number of people that visit the business. They like the idea but want it to be fair to everyone. One council member says the current formula gives larger businesses a big discount small businesses won't get.
"That's been my argument all along. Proportionately I would like for everybody to get the same proportionate discount," said Garza.
City staff is currently working on a survey that will help staff decide how to handle this decision. That survey is expected to be completed next month.
