MATHIS - The final resting place for many people outside Mathis is in desperate need of clean up. It's in Clareville, Texas, just in between Mathis and Beeville.

Couple Elsa and Martin Munoz have been trying to keep it clean for years. "To me, it's just sad," Elsa said, "to see it dirty like this, you know," Martin said, completing the thought.

The couple has spent many days there. It's a quiet and remote graveyard called he San Pedro cemetery. It's on a piece of donated land off FM 796.

Not a lot of people make it out that way, but the Munoz's make it a habit. The couple both have family there. In fact, Martin's uncle used to clean the cemetery, and before he died he asked his nephew to do the same. "We want to keep his place clean, you know? This is his house," Elsa said.

The upkeep is a lot for just two people. "Nobody is getting paid to do it. It's just coming from our pockets to do it, to clean it up," Martin explained.

Making matters worse, there's just too much trash left behind and nowhere to throw it. "All the piles, people just end up throwing it and that's how big it's gotten," Elsa told us. One trash pile has grown so out of control, it's actually covering someone's gravesite.

"We've been asking for people to come help us out, but so far no one has," said Martin. We found other graves, not covered in trash, but overgrown grass is taking over.

Some plots house husband and wife, others are buried alone. The Munoz's say no matter who was buried here, when or how, the gravesites deserve to be better kept for everyone to enjoy and pay their respects.

"It feels like they come and bury them here and they forget them and it's sad you know?" Elsa said, "We need it clean."

The Munoz family is organizing a cemetery clean-up this Saturday and they'd like anyone interested to help, either by volunteering or donation for gas and supplies. For more information, call 361-354-8632 or 361-354-8607.
