CORPUS CHRISTI -- The 2012 - 2013 budget was presented today at the CCISD board meeting announcing that overall teachers in Corpus Christi will get a three percent pay increase for the upcoming school year. The budget is expected to make a $2.7 million dent in the CCISD fund balance leaving some school board members with some concerns.

CCISD board member, Caroll Scott said, "I'm a little concerned about our continual eating away of fund balance."

Overall, however, school board officials seem pretty enthusiastic that they're looking at pay increases rather than cut backs.

The pay hike breaks down into a few sections. The average teacher will receive a 3% pay increase. That includes a 1.5% increase in salary and that same percentage increase in a one-time stipend.

Teachers on the higher end of the scale can expect a 2.5% increase. That will be in the form of a one-time payment and will not affect their permanent salary. On the low end, those who work part-time such as bus drivers and food service workers will receive $400. That averages out to a little more than 3% of their part-time salary.

While school board members seem to be in agreement with most of the budget, many of them expressed a need to provide money to other areas such as school crossing guards.

School board member, Dr. Tony Diaz said, "I think we need to be a mural to working out some resolution so that our children will be protected on the way to school and on the way home from school."

The budget will be presented at a final public meeting August 27th when it is expected to be approved.
