CCISD Makes Changes to Address Player's Death

CORPUS CHRISTI - The CCISD school board has announced some policy changes following the death of 13-year-old Cameron Espinosa. The Haas Middle School football player died days after suffering a severe allergic reaction to ant bites during a game.

At least one school board member has questioned whether more could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

The school board was looking at two main changes, providing emergency shots (EpiPens) for students who don't realize they have an allergy and having EMS staff present at all middle school football games.

Officials decided on having medics equipped with EpiPens at every game.

As for the Espinosa incident, a doctor out of Austin who's worked in school districts around the state will investigate the events of that night.

Primarily, if the field was properly checked and current district policies.

The district will meet with a local allergist to see if they can have additional EpiPens available to on-campus medical staff.

All middle school games this week will be played at either Cabaniss Field or Buc Stadium with a week-to-week decision on game sites afterwards.
