KINGSVILLE, Texas - New Texas A&M-Kingsville football coach David Calloway announced the hiring of two assistant coaches to his staff Thursday afternoon. One assistant joins the Javelinas from Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State and the other is former All-America player for the Javelinas.

Joining Calloway's inaugural staff is Roderick Taylor, who will serve as offensive coordinator, and former Javelina All-American and Hall of Famer James Jefferson returns to coach the secondary.

Taylor had been with the Mustangs since July 2009 first serving as receivers coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in the summer of 2011. The past two seasons MSU has recorded a combined regular-season record of 19-3. The Mustangs won three LSC titles in his tenure at the school

Statistically, the 2012 offense finished third in the country in rushing offense with over 323 yards a game and was first in the conference in points scored with 38.6 a contest. In 2011, Taylor's offense ranked first in total offense with 531.9 yards a game and averaged 48.6 points a game. Midwestern would finish the regular season unbeaten.

Taylor has also had stops at Southwestern Oklahoma State, Langston University and Oklahoma Panhandle State. At SWOSU, the Bulldog offense set school records in passing, while at OPSU Taylor helped resurrect a floundering program. The team had one of the top 10 turn arounds in 2003 according to the NCAA as it posted the program's first winning season in 10 years.

At Langston, Taylor served as the passing/rushing game coordinator. He helped lead the team to Central State Football League title in 2005 with an offense that averaged a league-best 35 points a game.

"I became familiar with Coach Taylor from his time in the league," said Calloway. "I was very impressed with what the offense had accomplished at Midwestern State during his time there. He helped guide them to a tremendous amount of success and I feel he can bring that success here."

Jefferson returns to the Javelinas where he was inducted into the department's Hall of Fame in 2006 where he saw action as both a running back and defensive back. In 1985, he was selected to the Football News All-America and was the LSC's Defensive Back of the Year as the team won the LSC title. Jefferson was a first-team All-LSC choice as he led the league in interceptions.

Following his collegiate career, Jefferson played in the both CFL and the NFL. He first played with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1986-88 twice earning All-Canadian team honors. Seattle then signed Jefferson in 1989 where he played five seasons. He was named AFC player of the week twice once in '89 and once in 1990. He set a then record for the Seahawks with a 97-yard kickoff return. Jefferson capped his career in the CFL with the British Columbia Lions. He won one Grey Cups with both Bombers and Lions.
When his playing career ended, Jefferson coached one year at Alabama State in 1996. He served as the secondary coach at Kingsville in 1998 and was a volunteer coach in 2007. In between stints he served as an area scout for the New Orleans Saints.

Jefferson moved to the high school ranks in 2008. He spent two seasons as defensive coordinator at Academy High School in Kingsville before moving to Corpus Christi Ray High School in 2010 where he was the defensive coordinator.

"I thought it was important to bring in another coach with ties to the program and Coach Jefferson has deep roots with the program," said Calloway. "He has been with the program in the past as a player, coach and is a member of the Javelina Hall of Fame. He grew up with this program. Besides those ties he has had tremendous success as a coach."
