CORPUS CHRISTI - It was a rough Christmas for one Calallen family, after a fire destroyed their home on Yellowstone Drive, Christmas Eve. Today, Mitch Bryan spoke with the homeowner, who said the fire did not ruin his family's Christmas spirit.
This is the last way anyone wants to spend Christmas, watching their home of 3 years, burn. But that's exactly how Chris Quitugua and his family spent their holidays.
Chris and his family were in Alice, spending time with family when they got a call from a neighbor, saying that their house was on fire.
"We rushed back over here and when I got back, the fire department was already battling the fire and an hour later, it was done," Chris said.
Chris says his wife, Deanna, is taking it especially hard.
"My wife still hasn't been in the house. She doesn't want to come to the house."
But with the holidays in full swing, Chris had no choice but to play dad, and make sure his three sons had a Merry Christmas.
And with the holidays now over, he's still not sure if they **understand** the devastation left behind by the fire.
"My two oldest ones, they got great friends, right now they're spending the night at each of their friends houses. And I don't think it has hit them yet. They do want to play their Playstation, but, unfortunately, it's in there," he told me.
Now, Chris and his family are staying in his childhood home, and with the help of family and friends, he hopes to pick up the pieces of this tragedy and move on.
Chris said, "I have great friends and family that lifted our spirits yesterday. Came to the house down the road, where my mom lives to celebrate Christmas with us. It was actually a great Christmas, unfortunately it wasn't in my house."
There will be a BBQ benefit on Saturday, at noon, at Tuloso Midway High School to try and help raise money for the family in need. There's also an account set up with Wells Fargo banks for the Quitugua family fund.
