CORPUS CHRISTI - Officials with the Corpus Christi Independent School District responded to the tragedy in Connecticut by sending out a phone message and email to all parents, reminding them about the safety procedures local schools have to keep campuses secure.
"Unfortunately, the tragedy has given us the opportunity to remind people of the established procedures we already have," Superintendent Scott Elliff says.
Those procedures include making all visitors to any campus check in at the front desk and wear a name badge as they move around campus.
Having all teachers keep their doors locked when the classroom isn't in use.
If any dangerous or violent situation happens anywhere near a campus, the school immediately goes into lock-down, keeping the students and staff in place until the police say it's clear.
Elliff added that some of the newer campuses have access doors that lock from the inside.
"We want our schools to be, think of our schools as places that are safe, that are violence free... This is very, very tragic," Elliff says.
He said the tragedy has reminded the administration to strictly enforce all of their safety policies.
"It certainly is a time for us not only to be mindful of the tragedy that they've experienced and what those families and the community is going through, but be mindful of what we need to do here to be vigilant," Elliff says.
Vigilant in protecting local campuses, after a terrible day for one community in Connecticut.
