CORPUS CHRISTI - Corpus Christi I.S.D board members say the 10 students suspended from Cunningham Middle School this week were using synthetic marijuana.

This is the second similar incident to happen in the district within two weeks.

Last week, it was Hamlin Middle School, where teachers found students under the influence of prescription drugs.

C.C.I.S.D board member Lucy Rubio says she's worried about the frequency of these events.

"I'm just very saddened that this has happned two weeks in a row and for our students to be making bad choices," she says.

She says she feels like kids are getting their hands on substances like prescription drugs more and more these days.

"They feel like well 'I feel good', and then a friend finds out, 'hey, I want to feel just as good as you are.' And then before you know it, it's being passed around," she says.

C.C.I.S.D Police Chief Kirby Warnke says the district has strong policies in place to handle situations like these.

"It's shocking. We don't want this to happen, but the sky is not falling," Warnke says.

He told us all first time offenders go into a three day program at the district's Student Learning Guidance Center, where students are educated on the dangers of drug use, and shown how to make better choices.

"Our mission is to try to turn a negative into a positive if we can," Warnke says.

Warnke added that the program is largely successful. He says most of the kids do not have to repeat it.

The Cunningham students were suspended for one to two days.

Many of the Hamlin students were placed into that program mentioned above.
