CORPUS CHRISTI - Corpus Christi Independent School District is taking a hard look at its medical practices during middle school football games after Cameron Espinosa's death earlier this week.
Espinosa is the 13-year-old Haas Middle School student attacked by ants during last Wednesday's football game. He suffered a severe allergic reaction as a result.
Superintendent Scott Elliff announced today the district is considering having ambulances and E.M.S. staff present at all middle school football games, something the district does not currently do.
He also said the district is looking at having EpiPens available to all students who suffer allergic reactions.
EpiPens are injections of epinephrine, a drug that fights those allergic reactions, and currently, the district only uses them on students who have a diagnosed allergy and a prescribed EpiPen.
The district added that they didn't know Espinosa was allergic to ants, and from what we've gathered, his family didn't know either.
As for the fields, the district says they were checked for ants Tuesday and Wednesday before the game. No ants were found.
However, rain does cause ants to come up.
"We do play on fields when they're wet. Immediately prior to the game, there was a rain shower that occurred immediately prior to the game, but it was no determined that it was not available for play at that time," Elliff says.
The district will also use an independent auditor to review it's policies.
Elliff says he will give the school board an update on what progress they've made at their meeting next monday.
