Businesses Expecting a Boost Regardless of Realignment Project

CORPUS CHRISTI - The new Shoreline alignment will move traffic away from Mcgee Beach from Lawrence Street to Buford. Two northbound lanes will run parallel to a pair of southbound lanes. Now, just as the project gets underway and traffic get diverted to Water Street. Some shops and restaurants may see a boost in business.

One business owner, Anastasia Strates who owns the Tango Tea Room welcomes the project with open arms.

"I think it'll be fantastic for the business owners in downtown Corpus Christi," Strates said.

She just bought the shop four days ago and is hoping the dozens of detour signs will drive business her way.

"I think it'll give everyone a chance to see what we actually have locally downtown, try some new things, see our beautiful downtown area," she added.

Although the restaurant is new for Strates, Corpus Christi is not, she's lived here her whole life and welcomes the road work to the area.

"I think it'll bring a lot more money to the downtown area so we can do more remodeling and everything and beautify our city," Strates said.

And while the road is getting a makeover so is the Tango Tea Room.

"I welcome them to please come and put their art work up on our walls, let everybody see them, we've got some beautiful artwork, very very talented people here in Corpus Christi," Strates said.

She's keeping the bohemian style and quaint atmosphere. Especially because it will be chaotic with the construction until next fall.

"It always gets darker before it gets brighter, you've got to take a few steps back before you take a few steps forward, I think it'll be a good project for us," Strates said.

She says not once, did she think the project was going to be bad for business. In fact, she's looking forward to being part of the downtown neighborhood.

This is not part of the 'Destination Bayfront' project. The Shoreline Realignment project is part of the city's bayfront development master plan.

Voters approved funding for the project in the 2008 bond issue. The realignment project is due to be completed by next November.
