Burners Without Borders To Help Clean Shooting Range on Padre Island

CORPUS CHRISTI - A grassroots group is stepping up efforts to clean up a stretch of Padre Island. Earlier this week we showed you the spot that's littered with trash and hundreds of old shotgun shells.

Patrick Brown and his friends make up the group Burners Without Borders Corpus Christi. They began their efforts on Padre Island about a year ago.

"There were places in this area where you could actually like, literally like wade through shotgun shells," said Brown.

They heard about the make-shift shot gun range from the folks at National Sea Shore. He then got permission from the General Land Office to clean the area up. The group had their first clean up in February.

"During those first cleanups we removed about 600 pounds of shot gun shells," said Brown.

At the time he only had eight people helping him, and they were able to clear out most of the area. But now, 5 months later, it's all trashed up again.

On Monday Nueces County Commissioner Joe McComb told us if the county were to buy this land from the GLO, they could have officers patrol the area to fix this problem. But Brown disagrees with that solution.

"Law enforcement here, once again, isn't the answer. Signs get shot up. Participation and community are the only ways that we're going to change the culture of use," said Brown.

Brown says when it comes to that area, we should patrol ourselves with a "leave it better than you found it" mentality.

"I would much rather have my patrol officers in highly populated areas, where they can provide the most services and not coming out here to check on to see if a couple of people are dumping... You know TVs or whatever," said Brown.

Brown says his group will meet in a few weeks to plan another cleanup in this area.
