Bulked-Up Beauties

CORPUS CHRISTI - The phrase 'it's a man's world' no longer holds true for the art of competitive body building and fitness competition.

More women are bulking-up... proving they have beauty, brains, and brawn.

Marlo Garcia puts in hours at the gym every week. At 33-years old, Marlo is preparing for her first body fitness competition. She's always been a fitness buff, but getting ready to compete later this month in the bikini competition at the NPC Battle on the Bay has brought her training to a new level.

"I want to show people you can be a badass in the gym and you can train hard but you can look good, you can have it all," said Garcia.

Clarissa Spear, 26, is a national level NPC competitor. She's competed in five shows, including a national competition in New Jersey on July 5th. Spear says the training is all-consuming.

"I make it basically my job." Spear added, "My work comes first and then it's like, gotta go to the gym."

These competitions bring on a huge commitment -- hours in the gym everyday and constant clean eating. Plus, there's the added expense of competition fees, travel, makeup, spray tans, and tiny bikinis.

"Those bikinis, man, they're pretty costly. They range anywhere from $300 to $1500. My national level suit was $1500," said Spears.

Garcia estimates her first competition will cost her more than $2000. She says, win or lose.. it's worth every penny.

"So if you win something like this, you have the chance to move on to a different show and there's different levels. But honestly, I'm just doing it because I love it."

And it appears many women have a love for the sport. The upcoming NPC Battle on the Bay sponsored by Pureline Fitness expects women to make up at least half of the anticipated 300 competitors. The competition is a regional qualifier and includes five categories: body building, fitness, figure, bikini, and physique.

The competition takes place on July 26th at the Selena Auditorium.
