Budget Battle Looms in Washington

WASHINGTON (NBC News) - The fight over a federal budget played out on Capitol Hill today.

At stake in today's political fight is food for Americans who've turned to food stamps in record numbers since the recession.

Also at stake is medical coverage thru the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare.

There's also the threat of a partial government shutdown on October first and defaulting on our debt.

This is playing with fire. Legislative arsonists are at work," said democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi of California.

Democrats say Americans are angry.

"And they cannot believe that our country is cruising toward another completely avoidable absolutely unnecessary crisis," Congresswoman Patty Murray of Washington State said.

Polls show most Americans do not back Obamacare.

"Because it's the biggest job killer in this country and it is hurting Americans," said republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.

The President said once again that it's working.

"The cost of health care is now growing at the slowest rate in 50 years, said Mr. Obama.

But Tea party republicans have forced the House Speaker to claim Obamacare must end or there will be a government default and shutdown.

"Republicans have no interest in defaulting on our debt. None. We just want find a way to pay it off," said House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio.

So the GOP controlled house votes today to cut food stamps 40 billion dollars over 10 years.
Closing loopholes they say.

Democrats say no. And no to killing Obamacare.

"Any bill that defunds Obamacare is dead. Dead," threatened democratic Senator Harry Reid of Nevada.

Meantime, the same old bitter battles are alive in Washington and once again creating a stalemate between democrats and republicans.
