CORPUS CHRISTI - Jake Buchanan pitched five shutout innings and Rene Garcia had the decisive RBI single as Corpus Christi defeated Midland 1-0 Tuesday night at Whataburger Field before 4,828.
The Hooks (14-11) scored the night's only run on Garcia's liner up the middle, which scored Erik Castro. Castro drew a one-out walk and moved to second when Ben Orloff punched a two-out single through the right side.
Buchanan (2-0) cruised through his five allocated frames. Over 69 pitches (44 strikes), he scattered three hits and fanned four. In five 2013 starts - a span of 25 innings - the North Carolina State product has 16 strikeouts and two walks.
Buchanan's counterpart, Murphy Smith (3-3), was lifted with two gone in the seventh for Jeff Urlaub. Smith yielded five hits, walked two and fanned five.
The RockHounds (13-12) brewed trouble for Carlos Quevedo in the eighth, but came up dry. Jake Goebbert and Miles Head opened with consecutive singles, but Goebbert was gunned out at third by Michael Burgess while attempting to advance after the Hooks left fielder caught a deep fly off the bat of Beau Taylor.
Alex Sogard notched his second save by achieving the final four outs.
Orloff has a five-game hitting streak.
Nick Tropeano (0-2) toes the rubber for Corpus Christi Wednesday at 7:05. His opposition is Zach Neal (2-0).
