CORPUS CHRISTI - It's that time of year again, where the Buc Days Parade celebration starts early on Leopard Street.
Once you pass Artesian Street, you will hear music blasting right in front of the courthouse from the Martinez and Gonzalez families.
Juan Martinez says the family has been coming out for the Buc Days Parade for over 50 years.
"It's a tradition that we carry in our hearts, from my mother to my grandmother, all of them," Juan Martinez explains.
The family camps out the Friday before the parade. Then, on Saturday, they bring a DJ, all their chairs, and fire up a pit.
Cooking has to start early because Juan says, they are expecting a big crowd later on.
"We are expecting to have about ohhhhhh...150 people," Martinez says.
Carmen Martinez says, he's not joking. The family has a tradition of saying a prayer of honor before dinner, and that is when most of the family shows up. "We thank God that he gave us the family that he did, we thank our grandparents for everything they taught us, everything they gave us over the years," Carmen explains.
Carmen says her grandparents recently passed. They kept the tradition strong.
But that has not stopped the family from carrying on.
"It's nice to know that we have that structure. Our grandparents put that into our parents, now our parents are putting it into us...and now I am putting it into my little guy," Carmen says.
She hopes that the babies of the 5th generation, like one of the infants, can be trusted with the Buc Days Parade baton.
