CORPUS CHRISTI - A Border Patrol agent was flown by Halo Flight to a Corpus Christi hospital this morning after a two vehicle accident on Highway 281 just north of Alice.
"It was like a loud bang," said Clay Lauer.
That sound is what lead Lauer and his family to the crash Thursday morning.
"And the next thing you know we look over here and we see this truck, still the dust hadn't even settled," said Lauer.
Sheriff's deputies say the border patrol agent was on his way to a call, driving east bound on County Road 227, when he didn't yield the right of way. A white was going north on 281 and that's when the truck slammed into the Border Patrol SUV. After the crash Lauer says the agent didn't hesitate to make sure the driver he hit was ok.
"The Border Patrol agent pretty much jumped out of his vehicle, the one that's right there, run around and check on this man right here," said Lauer.
Lauer says the agent then collapsed. That's when he stepped in to help.
"We got him to sit down and stay put. The other guy in the car we did the same thing to him. By then, there was a lot of people showing up," said Lauer.
HALO flight took the agent to Spohn Memorial in Corpus Christi. The other driver, 30-year old Sigifredo Nunez, was taken to Spohn in Alice. Both are expected to be ok.
This crash is still under investigation, but sheriff deputies say there is a chance the Border Patrol agent could be ticketed.
