KINGSVILLE - The Blue squad's special teams scored twice and setup the third touchdown as it defeated the White team, 20-14, in the Texas A&M-Kingsville spring game Saturday afternoon before 1,000 fans in Javelina Stadium.
A 60-yard punt return by wideout Patrick LaFleur, 5-8, 165-pound junior from Houston (Cypress Woods), put the Blues on the board first with 46 seconds left in the first half.
Punter/placekicker Max Lehnig, freshman from San Antonio (Judson), kicked the extra point.
The second Blue score came on a 35-yard return of a blocked punt by Gayln Griffin, 6-3, 195-pound freshman defensive lineman from Marble Falls.
Jordan Thomas, 6-0, 160-pound sophomore wideout from San Antonio (Stevens), blocked the punt.
The third touchdown was setup by a 32-yard interception return by Jakorey Davis, 6-0, 180-pound freshman defensive back from San Antonio (Roosevelt). He returned to the one-yard line where quarterback Trey Mitchell, 6-3, 188-pound junior from Clovis, Calif., carried it in with 2:32 left in the game.
Lehnig's extra point was blocked by Sione Tupouata, 6-4, 300-pound defensive lineman from Oakland, Calif., who had a big day for the White defense.
The White touchdowns came on a 14-yard run by SebastianTaylor, 6-1, 180-pound freshman quarterback from Irving (MacArthur), and a five-yard run by Chaz Adams, 6-1, 180-pound junior wideout from Houston (Alief Taylor).
David Calloway, Javelina head coach, said he enjoyed the overall performance, and especially the play by the special teams.
"The special teams played very well, the offenses were able to move the ball and the defenses tackled well," Calloway said. "We saw a lot of the things we wanted to see develop in a positive manner."
The Blue team had 157 total yards, 51 rushing and 106 passing.
Mitchell led the rushing with 20 yards on seven carries and he also topped the passing game with 56 yards, completing four of 11 throws. He had one intercepted.
Darrow Adams, 6-2, 210-pound freshman quarterback from Houston (Galena Park), completed four of nine passes for 50 yards.
Bobby Huey, 5-10, 230-pound running back from Lubbock, had three receptions for 75 yards.
LaFleur had three punt returns for 99 yards and D'Korian Ford, 6-0, 185-pound junior defensive back from Bay City, had two kickoff returns for 54 yards.
The White squad had 176 total yards, 41 rushing and 135 passing.
Greg Pitre, 5-8, 175-pound sophomore running back from Hutto, led the rushing with 29 yards on 12 carries.
Taylor rushed nine times for 21 yards and completed eight of 19 passes for 105 yards. He had one interception.
Caleb Bedford, 6-3, 210-pound sophomore quarterback from Houston (Alief Elsik), completed four of five passes for 25 yards.
Deon Martin, 6-3, 212-pound junior tight end from Bay City, had seven pass receptions for 67 yards.
Pitre had four punt returns for 70 yard and Joe Crowe, 5-10, 163-pound freshman defensive back from Houston (Aldine Nimitz), had two kickoff returns for 65 yards.
Bedford handled the White punting and booted five times for a 32.8 average.
The Javelinas will hold their final spring session Tuesday.
The squad won't assemble again until August when it prepares for the fall season which opens Sept. 6 with Humboldt (Calif.) State in Javelina Stadium.
