CORPUS CHRISTI - Senior Officer Jason Lee says he's been trained for just about anything that could come his way in the line of duty.
"Learn the laws, the procedures, the departmental procedures and then learn a lot of physical hands-on activity because there's a lot of that in our job," Lee said.
Yesterday, however, he encountered a situation that would require skills he hadn't been taught in C.C.P.D. training. Senior Officer Lee and his wife were having lunch out at Cole Park just Wednesday afternoon when a woman approached him frantically asking for his help.
"She just said 'Sir! Sir! Can you please help me?'" he recollected.
The woman told Lee her baby Doberman Pincher had fallen into the water at the marina and couldn't get back out. Treading water it was beginning to lose steam and started going under the surface.
"Every call we make is different and we have to make spit second decisions, you know, on what action to take," Senior Officer Lee said.
Senior Officer Lee raced to the scene to help. The marina wall stood about four feet higher than the water. Taking the risk of falling in himself and even scraping his arm on some barbed wire, the officer reached down to snatch the pup. The dog was frightened, however, and swam away.
"The owner told me the dog's name," Lee said, "and I started calling the dog by name and he started to be more trusting of me that I was there to help."
Then, with one swift grab, Lee caught the dog by his collar and hoisted him to safety. Although Senior Officer Lee has taken part in emergency situations before, as a dog owner himself, he knew that this rescue was just as important as the last.
"I don't know what I'm going to do from one day to the next," Lee said, "No two days are the same in this job."
