BENAVIDES - Residents in Benavides complain they're paying the city for trash pickup, but they're getting lousy service, and some folks tell KRIS 6 News, sometimes, they go weeks without their trash being picked up.
Homeowners pay $21 a month for trash pickup, and it's supposed to be picked up twice a week, but that rarely happens.
The city admits the pickup is bad sometimes, and that's because the only official trash truck they have is extremely old and breaks down all the time.
The city says they're strapped for cash, and repairs are costly, and take time.
Sometimes it takes a while for that truck to get repaired.
There are residents who say they understand the problem and say it's really not that bad.
"Maybe the ones that are saying they have trouble with pickup is because they don't pay," one man says.
On that note, the city says many residents don't pay their bill, and because of that, the city might have to raise the rates.
The city is considering combining water and trash into one bill.
That way, if a resident doesn't pay, their water would get shut off.
City officials say they are trying to buy a new trash truck.
They hope to have that done in the coming months.
