CORPUS CHRISTI -- The woman charged with murdering an elderly Corpus Christi man with the assistance of her boyfriend was in court Friday afternoon for a pre-trial hearing.
Esmeralda Benavides, 35, sat with her head down during the hearing, turning around only once to whisper "I love you," to family members seated in the courtroom.
Benavides and her boyfriend, Antonio Arredondo Jr., are accused of breaking into Felipe Martinez's apartment Aug. 8 after authorities said Benavides pretended to need help and tricked Martinez into letting her inside. Both Benavides and Arredondo were indicted on capital murder charges in November.
Police said Benavides and Arredondo brutally beat Martinez, 67, and robbed him.
Martinez died a few days later from a severe head injury.
