CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Another former Corpus Christi IceRay goaltender has announced his commitment to play NCAA hockey next year as Ben Myers will be between the pipes for the (D3) University of St. Thomas Tommies out of the MIAC.
"It's a great feeling and a big weight off my shoulders finally knowing where I'll be spending my next four years," said Myers. "It's great to finally see the rewards paying off of playing juniors the past three years."
The Wauwatosa, WI native spent two seasons in Corpus Christi after being acquired from Minot. In the 2012-2013 season, Myers posted a 2.88 goals against average and a save percentage of .913% en route to the IceRays' first every playoff appearance as members of the North American Hockey League. This past year Myers played in 39 games with a improved goals against average of 2.72 and a save percentage of .910%.
Myers will join a St. Thomas team who came off one of their best campaigns in team history winning 21 games for the first time since the 2000-2001 season. "It was a very easy choice for me ever since I stepped foot on campus. The education I'll receive can't be beat and the hockey program and overall atmosphere Coach Boeser and Coach Burgess have created at St. Thomas has made it a top contender every year for the National championship. It will be a new and tougher challenge jumping up to NCAA hockey. I'm excited to get everything started and see what the next four years have in store for me."
Before entering the North American Hockey League, Myers took the Flint Jr. Generals in the NA3HL into the playoffs with a 2.45 goals against average.
"We are always very happy for any IceRays player that receives a scholarship," said general manager Pat Dunn. "Ben had many deals fall through for him in the past few months. We are excited to see that something finally came through for him. It was truly deserved. We wish Ben all the best as he starts the next phase of his hockey career."
The opportunity to play in Corpus Christi along with the fan base will be the most memorable parts of his tenure with the IceRays. He will join former IceRay John Roisum who was a part of the Tommies this past year.
"The past two years in Corpus Christi have been great," Myers finished. "The fan base was absolutely unbelievable and the pro mentality instilled by the organization is going to pay huge dividends for my approach for college hockey and my education. I'd like to thank Pat Dunn and Justin Quenneville for the opportunity they gave me bringing me down two years ago, and the coaching staff especially Jeff Worlton and Jeff Paluseo who really helped me develop as a goaltender."
