Beeville Prison Guards Accused of Smuggling Contraband to Inmates

CORPUS CHRISTI - A federal indictment filed last Thursday and unsealed yesterday, charges 32 people, including 13 correctional officers, of smuggling contraband to inmates in the McConnell Unit in Beeville.
The indictment for racketeering says the 13 correctional officers provided marijuana, cocaine, cell phones, alcohol and tobacco products to inmates in exchange for cash. In one instance, an inmate allegedly paid one of the officers $1,400 to get alcohol, drugs and a cell phone.
The inmates used facilitators, outside the prison, to pay the employees, transfer the money, make the drug transactions and commit other crimes both inside and outside of the prison. Those people are also charged in the indictment.
The correctional officers charged are Stephanie Deming, Christy Nesloney, Kimberly Koenig, James Standlea, Desiree Silguero, Lela Hinojosa, Emmanuel Cotto, Megan Morales, Lakeisha Reid, Arturo Salas, Jaime Garza, and Oscar Juraidini.
According to the indictment, the crimes were committed beginning in January of 2005 and continued through this year.
The U.S. Attorney's Office will hold a news conference on the indictments Wednesday morning.
