CORPUS CHRISTI -- The 2013 Beach Fest came to a sudden end at Cole Park on Saturday. Several bands and others who planned to take part at the event are still asking what happened.
"This stage is shut down," Beth Guarneri said.
That one line from Guarneri, the event organizer, set off the crowds and participants involved with the event, like Joe, who lined up several hip hop bands to perform are unhappy with the results to say the least.
"It's a disappointment that everything had to turn out like that because it really could've been something nice for the city," Joe said.
It turns out park city officials told Guarneri the stage had to be shut down after the off duty officers providing security for the event took off because they weren't getting paid.
"We were supposed to have a concert going on and due to the officers not being paid they shut it all down," Joe said.
CCPD officials say that off duty officers work extra jobs on the side. Those are through contracts with event organizers and just like anyone else they are free to leave if they aren't paid.
Joe says, Guarneri tried to hide that detail by telling the crowd that swearing sparked the cancellation.
"While somebody was rapping out there they were cussing a little bit and stuff but that wasn't the reason why it got shut down it was because the officers weren't getting paid," Joe said.
As for Guarneri she said, "She didn't know she had to pay the officers upfront and that this event was created with positive intentions and that the changes that were made on saturday were out of her hands and she's sorry for the misunderstanding."
More than 80 bands were booked for the weekend's event but Guarneri says only 7 paid application fees. However, several more calls came into the newsroom, from members of bands who say they also paid the application fee.
