Bathroom Fire Knocks Out Power To Apartment Complex

CORPUS CHRISTI - Tenants at an apartment complex on Omaha Drive were without power most of the day after a space heater started a fire one in one of the apartment bathrooms.
Fire crews rushed out to the 700 block of Omaha around 8am this morning after a fire began to tear through one of the apartment's
bathroom wall.
"We woke up at 7:30 and I tell my husband, I smell smoke! And I'm very...I can sense it."
However she knew, next door neighbor, Yolanda Leveck was right, there was a fire, but not in her apartment. It was in her neighbor's.
"I got all scared, I didn't know what was going on. So my husband went over there and he tried to bang, because we thought somebody was there. But nobody was there, so thank God," Leveck said.
There was no answer because the man who lives there was at work. Fire crews knocked out the flames in a few minutes, but the fire damaged the power cables to the apartment, leaving all of the tenants in the dark.
"We have no power whatsoever," said Yolanda's husband, Gilbert.
"What's that causing inside? Obviously no heater. Is it pretty cold inside," I asked him.
"It's kind of cold at nighttime," Gilbert replied.
And with only so many hours in the day left, the apartment manager, Sylvia, immediately called the electric company to get the power back on.
The worker from Red Cross waited around until he was sure the power would be back on by tonight before leaving. We're told the man who lives in the apartment where the fire started will be staying in another apartment for a few days until his bathroom wall can be repaired, thankfully none of his possessions were ruined by the fire.
Fire officials say they believe a space heater might have been the cause and ask that if you use a space heater at your home, to make sure it's secure and that there is no flammable material anywhere near it.
