KINGSVILLE, Texas - In front of almost 1,000 screaming elementary students, junior Rashad Basey erupted for 20 second half points Thursday afternoon helping the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team to sprint past Eastern New Mexico in the final 20 minutes for an 82-63 win on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

Playing in front of students from several schools in Kingsville and the surrounding communities as part of the inaugural "Live the Dream" promotion, the Javelinas improved to 7-5 and 3-2 in the Lone Star Conference. They outscored the Greyhounds (5-8, 2-3) 45-28 in the second half breaking open a 37-35 lead at the break.

It took a few minutes for the Javelinas to get going defensively in the second half and ENMU took an early 45-43 lead on a Kyle Lantz 3-point basket - one of nine on the day for the visitors.

However, once the Javelinas got the defense turned up Kingsville went on a decisive 18-2 run. Basey, who would finish with 30 points in the game, had 11 points in the spurt including seven straight Javelina points as TAMUK took a 63-47 lead with 7:39 left.

The Greyhounds twice cut the deficit to nine points but could get no closer.

Kingsville shot a season-high 54.2% from the floor for the game including 58.6% (17-of-29) in the second half. Defensively, after letting the ENMU shoot 56.5% in the first half to stay within two at the break, Kingsville held them to 28% shooting in the final period showing why the Hoggies have one of the top defenses in the nation. Basey held Rodney Blackmon to two points. Blackmon entered as the Lone Star Conference's third-leading scorer with over 16 points a game.

Basey's 30-point performance was the first by a member of the Javelinas since Ashton Brown had 32 in back-to-back games last November against St. Edward's and St. Mary's. Three other Javelinas also tallied double digits. Dwight Taylor had 13, Adam Mughmaw 12 and Adonis Bailey 10. Reid Wallace and Mughmaw led the Javelinas with five rebounds each as Kingsville won the rebounding war 39-29. Kingsville turned 16 offensive boards into 23 second-chance points.

Rafael Love led the visitors with 20 points, while Kyle Lantz had 12 and Greg McFarland 10. McFarland led all players with seven boards.

The Javelinas will look to move to 3-0 in their current homestand when they host West Texas A&M on Saturday at 3 p.m. on Kingsville Hampton Inn in the SPEC.
