Baseball Takes Advantage of Southeastern Errors for Finale Win

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team (11-14, 3-3 Southland) was able to come away with a series finale win Sunday at Chapman Field, as it took advantage of eight Southeastern Louisiana (14-9, 4-2) errors to secure an 11-3 win.

Devin Skapura picked up his first career victory in Southland Conference play, as he went five innings while giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

For the Lions, it was Kyle Keller who fell victim to his team's miscues, as he saw eight runs come across during his four and 1/3 innings on the mound, while only one of which was an earned run.

Tyler Ware had his second consecutive multi-hit game, tallying his second three-hit game of the year, while driving in a run and scoring one as well. Picking up his first game with three knocks as an Islander was Josh Garza, as he went 3-for-5 with a team high two runs driven in, also coming in to score two runs.

The mistakes started early and often for the Lions, as Jordan Lee reached on a one-out error to shortstop, and eventually scored by using his speed to steal second, advance on a ground out and come in on wild pitch.

Then in the second, another error by shortstop Jacob Williams put another one-out runner on for the Islanders. A single by Dawson Yates eventually brought that runner in to score, before Lee drew a walk with the bases juiced to run the advantage to 3-0 for A&M - Corpus Christi.

The sloppy play continued for the Lions into the third, as they committed two more errors, while Ware and Garza both picked up hits in the inning to give the Islanders three more runs, extending the lead to 6-0. The sixth run was the only one that was earned so far in the game.

In the top of the fourth, Andrew Godbold led the inning off with a double for the Lions before back-to-back back singles brought Godbold and another run in to score to cut the lead down to four.

After the first scoreless bottom half of any inning, Southeastern looked like it was going to continue cutting into the lead, as it had two runners on with just one out. However, Skapura induced consecutive groundballs to keep the score at 6-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.

That was when the Islanders started to put the game out of reach, as they continued to capitalize on the Lions' mistakes, scoring three runs on no hits, three walks and two errors to make it a 9-2 ballgame.

After Southeastern plated a single run in the top of the sixth, the Islanders looked like they might end the game in the bottom of the seventh, as the home team pushed across two runs and still had the bases loaded with just one out, needing two more runs to invoke the 10-run rule.

However, John Gremillion came on and struck out back-to-back batters to keep the Islander lead at eight. This would eventually be the final deficit, as no more runs came across in the final two innings, as A&M - Corpus Christi was able to avoid the sweep.

The Islanders will now embark on a five-game road swing, starting with a midweek tilt with UTSA on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
