CORPUS CHRISTI - Everyday children at Baker Middle School come through lunch lines to grab things like fruits and vegetables. But once they sit down, things may take a turn for the worse.
"I was having death thoughts that it would be the end of my life", Rafael Robles explains.
That is what Rafael Robles remembers from yesterday after a kid bumped him while he was eating
"Everyone just froze there in shock", Lane Behnke he says reflecting on his friend Rafael choking on a french fry.
Rafael said it was like a normal day at Baker Middle School. He was joking with friends at lunchtime then food got caught in his throat, he turned bright red, and couldn't breathe. That's when his friend, Lane Behnke, jumped into action...
"I said gotta do it go, gotta save his life", Lane Behnke says.
That is what brought this 11 year old to his feet as he ran over and performed the heimlich maneuver on his friend;saving his life.
This emergency technique was something he learned at Boy Scout's recently and came running home to tell his parents.
"We were like that's great lane, congratulations and little did we know that a month later he would have to put it into practice and he jumped right to it", his mother Tiffany Richie says.
His mother wishes everyone would learn the heimlich because they never know when things can go wrong.
"Even if you never need it...it is better to know it and not need it then need it and not need it", his mother says.
Knowing how to save a life gained lane one of the school's top honors.
"this time around the administration is picking Lane because he did such an honorable thing", Darla C. Reid the Principal of Baker Middle School says .
He is receiving the student of excellence award from baker middle school and a sign his parents can stick in their yard to let the neighborhood know.
As for Lane in the future, he wants to be an engineer. but for now he is being courageous and helping others
"It's like the number one saying for myself, the only thing to fear is fear itself", Lane says.
