CORPUS CHRISTI -- If you've been out shopping lately, you've probably noticed those school supply lists out already.
So, KRIS Communications is once again teaming up with the United Way of the Coastal Bend, H-E-B and Goodwill for this year's Operation Supply our Students.
We went to check out the school supply aisles and found Cody gearing up for kindergarten. As an employee at Smith Elementary, Michelle Westbrook knows firsthand just how essential those back to school supplies are.
"I'm a school nurse so I see a lot of the kids come in with out supplies so I also have supplies in my office to help out the kids also," said Westbrook.
To get Cody excited for the school year, Michelle says the sky is the limit on today's shopping trip. She counts herself as fortunate not to have to watch her budget.
"How much do think we're going to spend... $30, $40, $50," she asked Cody. "Probably about $50," she told us, estimating on school supplies alone.
But not everyone is fortunate enough to have an unlimited budget. That's why the United Way of the Coastal Bend uses donations to Supply Our Students to buy in bulk. For every $10 you give, they can buy one student everything they need to start the school year.
Supplies like paper, folders, pencils, crayons and scissors are on their list.
The United Way estimates about 60,000 students will have a need for help this year and along with 6 News, H-E-B and Goodwill Industries, they hope to provide them all with supplies.
They are supplies that Westbrook knows can change a students outlook on school.
"When you give them the new stuff and they're able to go to class with the new stuff it makes them feel 100% better," she said.
