PREMONT - Authorities in Premont are investigating the death of a young girl on New Year's Day during a chase involving a state trooper.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a trooper noticed a suspicious truck parked behind a business on the northside of Premont around 3:45 p.m.
Corporal Charlie Ramirez says the driver sped down an alleyway when he saw the trooper approaching, then lost control of the truck as he turned onto NW 6th Street.
Everyone in the truck bailed out, but the girl fell to the ground. The trooper performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say an autopsy will be ordered to determine the girl's exact cause of death. We're told the 14-year-old driver and a 13-year-old female passenger were not injured. According to DPS, no one is charged at this time.
We spoke with family members of the 14-year-old who was allegedly driving the truck at the time. They tell us two girls took their stepfather's truck without permission and let the boy drive when they picked him up.
The family claims the boy panicked when he saw the trooper and put the truck in reverse before everyone bailed out.
