HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania - The Three Mile Island nuclear plant 12 miles south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania automatically shut down at 2:20 this afternoon. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud noise that was caused by steam being released from the plant, according to affiliate WGAL.
Plant officials are investigating, but say there is no health risk and the public is not in danger. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission tells NBC News there is no evacuation of the plant. The plant shut down because one of its reactor cooler pumps tripped, and the plant responded as designed.
