CORPUS CHRISTI - The man accused of fatally beating his own father broke down while testifying at his trial today. Joshua Atwood held is head in his hands, crying and unloading his testimony to the jury.
He told the court he never meant to hurt his dad, but felt he had to defend himself. Atwood swore his father, Todd Atwood, hit him first and pulled a knife on him during the fight back in July 2011.
The father was treated at an area hospital for internal bleeding, fell into a coma, and later died.
The defense is pushing for the jury to look past the charge of capital murder and look towards the lesser charge of aggravated assault.
Jury deliberations are already underway. Atwood faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison if convicted of capital murder.
