Atwood Convicted of Manslaughter for Father's Death

CORPUS CHRISTI - A Nueces County jury has found Josh Atwood guilty of manslaughter for a fight that resulted in the death of his own father. He was facing the possibility of life in prison if convicted of capital murder.
Atwood explained to the jury what happened that the July 2011 fight started when he grabbed his wife's arm to leave his father's house.
"My dad said don't treat her that way and said to me 'you're going to jail,'" Atwood said.
He says he took the phone from his dad, Todd Atwood, and broke it in half and that's when he says the first punch was thrown.
"He hit me right in the teeth. I'm going to say the first hit did affect me, it knocked me silly," Atwood said.
That's when Atwood says he had to fight back hitting his father and that he was only defending himself and his dad kept coming at him.
"I was being attacked by my dad," Atwood claimed.
During the fight Atwood says he saw his father grab a knife from the kitchen.
"I was kind of sad because I know what he was going to do to me with that knife," Atwood said.
He says he then backed up out the front door of the home but when he heard the door lock in front of him, he kicked it in to get his wife and daughter out.
"I went directly to the room and said 'come on babe let's go,'" Atwood said.
Atwood was arrested shortly after getting home with his family. He says it wasn't until the next day when he learned about his father's serious condition.
"I was just shocked, I was scared," he added.
Despite his fear about his dad's injuries, Atwood still believes that he is the victim in all of this.
