CORPUS CHRISTI - The attorney for 87-year-old Pat Suter agrees statements his client allegedly made to a hit and run investigator were "a little bit insensitive."
Suter surrendered Wednesday day on a charge related to the hit and run of local attorney Richard Leshin. Leshin was hit from behind earlier this month while bicycling along Ocean Drive. The driver never stopped and left Leshin with a broken ankle and spinal injuries.
Several days later, police impounded Suter's car as they believe it is the one that hit Leshin.
According to the hit and run investigator, Suter made a comment about her "poor car" and showed little concern for Mr. Leshin. She said he should have been wearing more reflective clothing.
Attorney Mark Di Carlo advised his client not to speak with us today, so we talked to him about her arrest for hitting a cyclist and not stopping to help.
"I'm not going to disagree with you that these statements typed up with officer Schwartz at that scene, they do not indicate remorse on this date," Di Carlo told us. He continued, "So assuming everything is 100 percent true, it does sound as if Mrs. Suter was a little bit insensitive."
The other question on everyone's mind is why didn't she stop. The police report says she thought she hit a trash can rather than a person.
"It was dark, she was having problems, documented problems with her right eye, which would have been the one in her field of vision," Di Carlo explained.
A possible honest mistake, but the lack of remorse in the police report does raise some serious questions.
