CORPUS CHRISTI - A huge accident on I-37 caused quite the mess during this morning's commute and also sent several people to the hospital.
Just after eight o'clock between Carbon Plant and McKinzie, an accident on the highway caused a chain reaction. Police estimated a minimum of 20 cars and one 18-wheeler were involved in the giant crash.
One man said he narrowly missed the accident. "I was driving up there in the Ford and everybody started jamming the breaks," Casey Caraway said, "I locked the brakes, slid through everybody and about 8-10 cars locked up. I slid through without getting hit."
Ambulances took at least five people to the hospital but said their injuries didn't appear to be life threatening. The pileup caused quite the delay, backing up a long stretch of traffic. At last check, police didn't issue citations but blamed the crashes on rain and speed.
