CORPUS CHRISTI - A man walking along Highway 181 near North Beach was killed in a hit and run early Saturday morning.
Drivers first called 911 to report debris in the roadway, but the calls soon changed to frantic pleas for medics as witnesses noticed it was a man in the road.
Police believe he was hit from behind while walking along the causeway towards Portland. He died at the hospital.
The medical examiner has identified the victim as 42-year-old Leonardo Ortiz Juarez.
A few hours after the man's body was found, a Corpus Christi police officer noticed a damaged Volkswagen Beetle on the side of the road.
Officers tracked down the owner, 52-year-old Tamy Shobar, and arrested her for causing an accident involving serious injury or death.
Shobar has at least one prior conviction in San Patricio County for driving while intoxicated and a conviction for leaving the scene of an accident.
